You know that old saying? 'Variety is the spice of life!' Well, it's true. It's true about life & it's true about your Etsy shop!
For a shop to be successful it has to appeal to a diverse clientele. It is so easy for us to get stuck in a idea rut & miss out on sales & growing our businesses. Diversifying & expanding your shop can be done in several, simple ways. & should be done in every way that you can do & do well.
For a shop to be successful it has to appeal to a diverse clientele. It is so easy for us to get stuck in a idea rut & miss out on sales & growing our businesses. Diversifying & expanding your shop can be done in several, simple ways.
(Outside the Box by NewbyArt)
First, take a look at your existing product line. Let's say that you make scarves. Can you ad more available colors to your selection? Can you add more sizes (small, medium, large or shorter & longer)? Can you offer some different styles, for example: with or without tassels?
Making sure to vary your product line will lead to a better assortment in your shop. A bigger & better assortment will mean there is more likely something to turn a browsing customer into a buying customer.
& though I used "scarf makers" as the example, everyone can do this in their shop. Just look at what you are making now & consider the possibilities!

Now, let's talk materials (or presentation).
Also, varying the presentation of your work will mean that you can list it in different categories across Etsy. Your shop will go from just being seen in the 'Art' category to being pulled up under 'paper items' & 'accessories' too. This will benefit your shop by making you versatile & more visible.
& after you add more colors, more styles, more sizes & a variety of presentation options you will probably notice that you have expanded your price points from 'impulse items' to 'high end ooak pieces'. This is the most important part of diversifying your store front. This is the key.
You want to be just as appealing to the customer who has $5 & is impulse shopping as you are to the customer who has $100 & is looking for that one of a kind treasure. & by fleshing out your product line to the best of your abilities you should be able to achieve this more often, thus making your shop more successful overall.
So the next time you feel like you are in a creative rut, don't worry. Just take what you already love to make & expand your horizons!

fabulous words!
You always give great advice! In my shop because I design my own characters I recently started selling stickers and will soon add sheet magnets. I think it's done fairly well in the short time I've had them. I know that people like my designs but don't necessarily need to spend $10 on a necklace or earrings so lower price pointed items that reflect my style definately are an advantage to have in the shop.
Excellent advice Amy!
Great advice and I love your blog :)
Thanks for the wise words Amy
fabulous blog! Thank you for sharing all those tips!
Great suggestions!!
This is an awesome post!
I really enjoy your writing style, fresh ideas and how the items tied in with your theme!
So you not only create adorable jewelry but write and give advise as well?
How talented is that?
I've been working on this lately, while also trying to simplify my shop too...
When I first added Sterling silver earrings to my shop, I had them all in their own category, and never sold a pair... but, when I started to mesh them into the regular 'earrings' section in my shop, all of a sudden now I'm selling them.
For me, keeping my sections simple is working, but I also love variety and totally agree that we should branch out and try to reach new customers by offering some diversity...
;)
You're so right! Variety is good!
Love the variety that you went into in this post :) Have a great weekend!
Excellent tips! Your post has got me thinking about how to expand my shop selection.
This has really got me thinking about my shop as I have added postcard, bookmarks, books etc... but still I have always thought it needed something else but decided to see what happens with what I have. I guess I shouldn't think that and continue to add variety :)
Thanks for sharing!
The spice of life earrings and eyespy necklace are fabulous!
Great advice about sprucing up your shop! Words we can all use and live by.

this is great amy, thank you!
Thanks again for another great post.
Great post. You've gotten me thinking. I had beaded bookmarks in my shop, but I took them out because they weren't jewelry. Maybe I'll put them back in and close my other negelected shop.
Great advice, Amy. Thanks for always being so positive :)
I just wanted to say HI--I still don't have a list-- but I am getting into a routine that is working for me...I see you are a VERY, VERY BUSY GIRL...
Great ideas. I really never thought of the advantages of some of your suggestions. I appreciate your willingness to share your ideas.

Your blog makes a wonderful read. Great advice in this entry. Thanks. Will be adding a link. Cheers!
I found this post very interesting and it has certainly given me some food for thought....!!! I still class myself as an Etsy newbie as I have only had a shop since the middle of March but it is worth planning things out in your mind for the future. Thanks.
You always have such great ideas...and ways for all of us to make our stores better! Thanks!
i love the spicy earrings!
Nice blog - you're in my bookmarks now.

this blog entry comes at the right time. Martha Stewart introduced me to this business concept when she wrote about it on an editor's letter: From one product, you can gain five, or 10, or 20 different revenue sources.
By the way, I like your examples much better :)
Thanks for sharing these great tips!
